Moments of enculturation

We have been living in Australia for nearly 14 weeks now. As expected, the children are becoming Australians much more quickly than we are. A case in point…

The Miss Sixes came home from school today, full of stories about another child in their class. Sam, as I shall call her, had been required to write sorry notes to one of the Miss Sixes, and to another child in the class.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because Sam hit me and bit Flynn.”

“Oh!” I said. “That’s not good behaviour. Poor you, and poor Flynn.”

“It was Flynn, Mum,” said the other Miss Six.

“Yes,” I said. “Flynn.”

“No Mum. Not Flynn. Fleen.
