In a strange land

Except for me!

Friday 3 July 2009 · 6 Comments

Dear Leader (here in Australia, that is) has promised to lobby the Vatican in favour of the canonisation of Mary MacKillop [link].

Apparently:

Mary MacKillop would be a saint for all Australians.

Except me! And I suspect a lot of other Australians* who really couldn’t give a damn.

* I have dual citizenship, in New Zealand and Australia.

Oh, and about 90% of the people I know here, who either don’t give damn, or give a damn the wrong way.

What a waste of space. This is all to lock in the conservative catholic vote, of course.

So when’d you get the Aus citizenship? We moved here in ‘02, after NZers were automatically PRs and didn’t apply so are short two years before we can be Aus citizens. Did you do the full two years as a PR?

Ahh!!! We were here from January 1997 to January 2000, while I was writing my thesis, and I took it out then, on the grounds that it would be useful to have it. So I got in before the rule changes. Our elder daughter was born here, so she is an Australian citizen, and she holds NZ citizenship by descent. Our younger daughters were born in NZ, so they have NZ citizenship, and via me, Australian citizenship by descent. Mr Strange Land did not take out Australian citizenship by descent when we were here from 1997 to 2000, but he got permanent residence in virtue of my citizenship, and as soon as he can, he will convert that to Australian citizenship.
