Apparently the sex trade is doing great business in Sydney with all the Catholic pilgrims in town.

I laugh at any suggestion that all the pilgrims are particularly devout. Primarily they are young people who found a community sponsored, parent approved, way to get overseas for a holiday and a party. They may have an interest in getting to see the pope ‘live in concert’, but that’s not the only appeal.
There are also a lot of not so young people there, and a lot of media, who aren’t necessarily pilgrims. Perhaps there are also a lot of Sydneysiders desperate to protest in one of the few ways they can.

We’re also assuming there will be a generation of World Youth Day babies.

That’s so funny – Ray has been commenting all week that it would be interesting to see if there are any ‘population spikes’ 9 months after World Youth Day. My observation is that there has been an awful lot of sight seeing going on around Melbourne (and guitar singing in the streets) which looks kind of like schoolies weekend with less beer. I suspect that Kate’s right in that it’s just a good opportunity to go on a holiday with all yer mates (and parental approval).
Hell I’d go if my parents would let me!
