In a strange land

Where’s he gone?

Friday 6 June 2008 · 8 Comments

My e-friend merc, purveyor of fine poetry, mesmerizing photos of surf, and head-hurtingly thought provoking art, has taken his blog down. And now, when you go to his site – http://looseliver.blogspot.com/ – all you see is this.

I hope he comes back.

It happened as a result of a comments thread over at Che Tibby’s Object Dart.

Whoops, wrong thread – this one

yup. dan was joking that he was autopopulating as merc. i followed up by adding a sentence to merc’s next comment, “for a laugh like”.

paranoia overcame merc and he deleted his entire web presence…

    Oh no! What a mess.

FWIW, a couple of Australian wordpress based blogs seemed to be having troubles with comments…

    I’ll be missing merc.

I’m feeling rather sad about all this, for the reasons in my post, but also because two of my friends are fighting with each other. I want to sit in a corner and hold my hands over my eyes and ears and pretend it’s not happening, and hope it will all blow over. A coward’s retreat….

I do know that I would be very worried and upset myself if I found my own on-line name and cat being used by someone else, even if it was meant as a joke (I realise you weren’t the person who started that, Che, per your comment above), and even more worried that it wasn’t stopped straight away (‘though I do realise that given that it all happened on a work day, it may have been difficult for you to get to your blog and fix it, Che). Even so, I think the word you are looking for with respect to merc is “sorry”.

I haven’t seen the stuff you linked to, Che – it’s been taken private. I know that in person and on-line you are a kind and considerate person, interesting to talk to, with one of those broad ranging minds that’s interested in all sorts of things. And that you mean to do well by people, and try to do so, and indeed, do do so. And I am very glad to be able to count you as a friend, both on-line, and in person. So there you are, some genuinely meant praise to counter whatever might be out there elsewhere.

I have been contemplating a post entitled “In praise of the poet” for a couple of weeks, sparked by something that happened off-line. I’ll try to get it up in the next few days, but when it does go up, it’s not meant to be in response to this storm. It was something I was planning anyway.

Go and read my whale post for some light relief.

not sure where you’re getting the idea there is a spat going on.

i’m neither upset or angry. mostly confused, and a little illuminated.

Oh. You sounded upset over the comments thread at mercproductions, and I can see that merc’s upset with what has happened at your place…

    My misinterpretation then. I’m sorry.
